Decathlon World Records & All-Time Rankings: Every Great Performance

The decathlon is athletics' ultimate test of versatility, demanding excellence across 10 events over two days. Kevin Mayer's 9,126 points set in 2018 represent the current world record, while the mythical 10,000-point barrier remains unconquered. This guide ranks the greatest decathlon performances.

Decathlon World Records & All-Time Rankings: Every Great Performance

The decathlon comprises Day 1: 100m, long jump, shot put, high jump, 400m; and Day 2: 110m hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin, 1500m. Points are calculated using the IAAF scoring table. A perfectly balanced decathlete would score approximately 900 points per event. In practice, specialists may score 1,100+ in their best events and 700-800 in weaker ones.

Reaching 10,000 points would require averaging 1,000 points per event — equivalent to approximately 10.40s in the 100m, 7.60m in the long jump, and 4:20 in the 1500m simultaneously. This combination of sprint speed, throwing power, jumping ability, and endurance has never coexisted in a single athlete. The closest approach remains Mayer's 9,126.

The women's equivalent, the heptathlon, saw Jackie Joyner-Kersee set the world record of 7,291 points in 1988. Nafi Thiam (Belgium) is the modern era's dominant multi-eventer, with Olympic golds in 2020 and 2024. The seven events (100m hurdles, high jump, shot put, 200m, long jump, javelin, 800m) test a similar range of abilities.
